Focused Ultrasound (HiFu)

Temperature Measurements for Focused Ultrasound Applications

Focused Ultrasound is used for minimally invasive surgical treatments. Focused Ultrasound or HiFu is used to treat hard to access surgical locations in the body and prevents invasive surgery. The Noninvasive surgical advantages are quicker recovery, lower infection rates and surgery while the patient is awake. Focused Ultrasound uses acoustic energy to heat, warm or destroy tissues. Conventional Temperature measurement equipment such as thermistors heat up or are not compatible with FUS MRI guided surgery. Osensa Innovations makes Fiber Optic Temperature Probes for Medical Applications that work in the presence of FUS and MRI. The Fiber Optic Probes can be used to make temperature measurements in applications where Focused Ultrasound Measurements are done such as brain surgery, uterine fibroids and prostate applications.

The probes are used in phantoms, animal studies and material studies.

  • For human applications, probes can be used in FDA approved surgical instruments. Probe selection is based on Focused Ultrasound Frequency, temperature range and power.
  • The PRB-140 is used above 1 MHz & The PRB-242 is used for applications below 1 MHz
  • For surgical applications, the medical fiber optic temperature measurement probe is used to verify and compare the simulation with the actual measurements. It helps verify and validate a simulation.
  • The PRB-140 and PRB-242 are used with the high gain FTX-100-LUX+HG, FTX-200-LUX+HG and FTX-300-LUX+HG
  • The Digital Sync Record is used with the temperature transmitter so that the system can identify the time that the Focused Ultrasound Pulse is applied. The actual temperature is usually slightly delayed as the device under test heats up.
  • The Digital Sync record typically will connect to the FUS TTL synchronization connection.
